There are so many wonderful flat breads from around the world. We’ll be griddling corn tortillas, making a laminated Moroccan flat bread called m’smen, using our wood fired oven for the whole wheat pita, and doing a demo of Indian naan. In this class you'll be busy mixing, kneading shaping and rolling your doughs. We'll finish them in the oven, on a griddle and inside our wood-fired oven! Open up your mind and your recipe box to the world of flat breads!

We’ll lead you in making Zingerman's Delicatessen's recipe for really great chicken pot pie from scratch, including mixing and rolling the flaky pie crust, cooking the velouté sauce, assembling the aromatic filling and shaping the pies. Join in on the hands-on fun and learn to make a classic comfort food.

Learn to make just a few of our favorite house made soups at the Bakehouse. Stir up some flavor with Gabor’s Butter Bean and Ham with Hungarian paprika and 5 O’clock Cheddar Ale, We’ll also demonstrate how to make the perfect matzoh ball when we cook up Tibor’s matzoh ball soup with goose broth, the traditional Hungarian version. You'll learn valuable cooking skills that are the building blocks of making great soups. These recipes are sure to be added to the family's mealtime most requested list.

We became friends with Eli and Tino of Dresdner Backhaus, a famous bakery in Dresden, Germany. When working with them we exchanged recipes and experience freely. Come and learn three breads our German friends taught us: Dinkelbrot, a spelt bread and sunflower loaf; Wurzelbrot, a rye and wheat baguette; and Vinschgauer, a savory seasoned mountain
roll delicious with ham and cheese. You might want to have some at home

We created this class years ago to celebrate Zingerman's Delicatessen's anniversary (they opened way back in 1982!). Hop on the tahini train! We’ve been experimenting in the kitchen with the latest culinary craze, tahini (rich sesame paste). And we’re using a particularly great organic tahini we sourced from Cyprus. In this class you’ll bake tahini butter cookies, tahini banana bread made with Michigan wheat flour and black sesame seeds, and tahini filled croissants. (Due to time constraints, we will provide you with already baked croissants to fill.) They'll add excitement and flavor to your baker's recipe box.

Let's bake pastries for dinner! In this class we'll delve in to a few of the delicious savory pies found in just about every culture. We'll make chorizo empanadas, found in Spain, Portugal, Central and South America; potato knish, a Jewish staple in Eastern Europe; and beef pasties, served up by the thousands in Michigan's Upper Peninsula but originating in England. We'll teach you how to make a flaky pasty dough, empanada dough, and tender knish dough. Learn to make the rye Zingerman's is famous for! Saveur magazine called it "America's best rye." You'll make onion rye, pumpernickel and vorterkaker, a Norwegian 100% rye. For most people, the phrase “American bread” conjures some unfortunate stereotypes: most are bland, wheat bread is dry, and cornbread is just for sopping up chili. In this class, you’ll taste just how good American breads can be. You’ll learn how we make our tasty Boston Brown bread and tender biscuits; discover a 100% whole wheat bread so sweet, Bakehouse founder Frank Carollo named it after his daughter Margaret; and bake our tasty, slightly sweet Northern style cornbread. Get plenty of hands-on practice at mixing, kneading and shaping your loaves too. Once you’ve taken this class, you’ll never have to settle for stereotypes again!
